The Art of Abstract Impressionist Portraiture

Gregg Hinthorn

My abstract impressionist portraits delve into the complexity of the human spirit, offering a glimpse into the individual's essence.

My journey into the world of abstract art began in high school, when I first encountered the work of Mark Rothko. The piece that captured my imagination was "Four Darks in Red," housed in the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City. This encounter sparked a lifelong fascination with abstract art, leading me to explore the depths of human emotion and experience through my creations.

After a hiatus from painting, I returned to the canvas in my late 40s, armed with a renewed passion and a deeper understanding of life's complexities. My zeal, now weathered and refined by life's vicissitudes, found expression in vibrant colors and intricate patterns.

My creative process is far from a solitary act of staring at a blank canvas. It's a journey of deep connection and understanding. Each piece begins with a person - a conversation, a shared moment, a glimpse into their life. I delve into the essence of my subjects, uncovering their hopes, fears, joys, and sorrows. This intimate understanding forms the foundation of my abstract impressionist portraits.

I believe capturing the unseen nuance offers a more profound understanding of the individual.

The abstract impressionist portraiture celebrates the human spirit in all its complexity. It's about capturing a likeness and revealing the soul beneath. I explore the rough areas, the moments of joy and sorrow, the petty grievances, and the unexpected delights that make us human. In capturing these nuances, my work transcends the realm of photorealism, offering a more profound understanding of the individual. Many of my subjects have expressed that these portraits, which capture the essence of their being, reflect their identity more accurately than a photorealistic rendering ever could.
